A 5-step guide to writing content that meets your marketing goals

When it comes to content, you might think you already know it all. While there are countless tutorials and how-to tips, I’m here to tell you that there is always more to learn.

Marketers depend on content. However, not all content is successful. Part of the reason is your content creation methods. That said, here are some tips for creating great content that will meet your needs and the needs of your audience.

1. First determine your goal

You should never produce content just to have new content. You need to create content that helps you achieve a defined goal. You might be trying to achieve some goal like establishing thought leadership, driving more sales, more leads, more traffic, or something else.

When you have your goal, you can determine the important creative elements, such as the depth and detail of the article, your tone and overall writing style, and whether you are educating or providing solutions for your reader.

Knowing the purpose of the content will help you achieve the goals you set for yourself.

2. Select a subject

A quality topic will help you achieve your goal. It should be something your audience wants to learn.

There are several ways to search for topics, including:

  • Frequently Asked Questions from Customers.
  • Trending topics.
  • Keyword research.

Once you’ve figured out what you want to write about, it’s time to research the topic and refine your idea. You need to make sure that you can support the claims that you are making.

3. Build the framework for your content

Once you know the type of content you want to write, your topic, and the information you are going to include, you need to create an outline for organizing your ideas.

You don’t have to create a formal plan and there is no right way to organize the content. The idea here is to structure the ideas you have a bit. This will help you present the information logically.

4. Start writing

This is the easy part. You’ve done the hard work of planning all of your content, and now is the time to flesh out the ideas you have. You don’t have to start at the top. The goal is to write based on the outline you have created. You can jump from section to conclusion as you write, if you like.

5. Create content that drives results

Creating content is easy. Creating content that helps generate the desired results is more difficult. While this is true, the tips above will help you with this difficult task. Make sure to keep this in mind, which will minimize problems and ensure you get the desired results with your content creation efforts.
